Pilates - A Perfect Exercise For Back Pain
Posted on Sunday, May 10, 2009 in Diseases And Conditions
Common misunderstanding is that exercise should be avoided when experiencing back pain. Many of us are thinking that any exercise or stretching will aggravate back pain and make it worse. This may make someone rely too heavily on medical treatments and underemphasize the importance of exercise for healing and long-term back pain relief.
The fact is that for most back problems exercise and movement are a natural stimuli for the healing process! Controlled, gradual and progressive exercise like Pilates, rather than total inactivity and bed rest, most often provides the best long-term solution for reducing back pain and preventing - or at least lessening - future episodes of pain.
Most experts recommend no more than one or two days of rest at the onset of most episodes of back pain. Inactivity can actually increase back pain as the back easily becomes stiff and weak. As the pain increases, many people reduce their activity and exercise levels, resulting in even more back pain and aggravating the cycle of inactivity and back pain recurrence.
Exercise plays a dual role of both treating back pain and helping prevent future episodes of pain. By nourishing and repairing spinal structures, exercise helps alleviate existing back problems. Movement and exercise keep the anatomy of the back healthy, flexible and strong in order to reduce the chances of further injury and back pain. Exercise may be one of the few effective treatment options to manage chronic low back pain. Pilates is one of the best exercise form for people who suffer back pain.
Pilates is a low-impact exercise that focus on building a strong body core. Pilates can help to increase spinal range of motion, strengthen abdominal and back muscles, and increase general flexibility. Good Pilates teachers pay attention to correcting and improving your posture too.
It’s important to consult your physician first before initiating a Pilates program and be sure that you Pilates teacher has experience to work with back pain. One-on-one Pilates training with professional Pilates teacher can really help your back and overall well-being.
